This wasn't exactly my reaction on reaching Atlantica...I had been spoiled beforehand thanks to some other pictures on this site (which do the gag much funnier than this, I might add) and the fact that I'm pretty sure I've had a crush on Ariel since before I knew why she wears seashellsby the seashore in the first place more or less guaranteed her a spot in the party...but this was how I pictured my version of Sora reacting when he arrived. And it was also kind of how it happened...I knew she kicked butt, but the first time she went and tore through a school of Heartless like a shark in a tank of tuna still blew me away.
No, she did not actually use "My Final Heaven," but artistic license can do what it wants to.
I wound up spending most of my time in Atlantica due to the fact that Ariel is freaking awesome, I have that aforementioned crush, AND there are no platforms in that world. No jumping repeatedly and failing to grab on, no missing the edge and having to spend ten minutes getting back, no getting knocked back by the enemies...just you, a redhead in a swimsuit, and mountains of experience and items stuffed in bags of monsters. Oh, and an octopus duck.
The time spent on this was...immense. It took a LONG, long time. Every bubble you see was hand-circle-tooled. No copying, no pasting, just circle-circle-circle. I never want to draw another bubble again. I used many references, primarily because this was my first time drawing Sora and Ariel always bugs me when she turns out wrong. I also had to reference pictures of Tifa for the final three panels (which do, admittedly, include a copy-and-pasted Ariel).
I would like to note, though, that the second picture of Ariel was freehand, and also the first picture of her that I drew for this comic. It sat unattended for months, though, until I finally got around to finishing this thing. And I'm pleased with most of it...
...except for that final panel. I agonized for DAYS over what that final panel should be. Punchlines included:
"We are staying here. Forever."
"Goofy, you're out."
"She stays."
"..."
I'm not thrilled with the final result of the last panel, though, mainly because I feel Sora is too far away. Oh, well. He wasn't the reason I drew this.
I referenced a lot of this from the movie...I think most of the colors were from the game, but the style was meant to mimic the movie. It looks fine to me.
I also worked with the pacing of this monster, and ran into some problems with panels like the "OMINOUSLY EMPTY SPACE" one. But all-in-all, I think they turned out pretty cool. I particularly like the lightning in the explosion.
Ariel, Goofy, and Donald are copyright Disney.
Sora and the Heartless are from Square Enix. And Disney. Kingdom Hearts.
Comic is mine. Inspired by some others on this site, you can find them pretty easily.
Sadly, I'm very doubtful that Kingdom Hearts will ever provide me with this experience again...I can hope, but I'm not going to hold my breath.
