When I say that I'm using the Avril Lavigne project for almost every female in the show, I MEAN that.

And despite the statue in the background, this is NOT Kyoshi's pic, she'll get her own.

Koko was one of the members of the project whose design I'd already planned before I found her song; I wanted her to be doing something dealing with the fact that she will probably be a Kyoshi Warrior someday. Destiny, caste system, just the fact that her attitude and fire makes her the perfect candidate...she'll be one someday. Unfortunately, none of the songs I had fit the concept well enough...so I looked on Wiki for Avril's latest album, and there in front of me was the title "I Will Be." Too perfect.

So, I illegally downloaded the song (I still plan to buy the album, but I couldn't make the pic without knowing the song, don't kill me, I feel guilty enough), listened to it, and it's now one of my favorite Avril songs. It has so much potential for any other character, but Koko's theme fit the title perfectly.

I wound up toying with several concepts; Koko looking at Kyoshi's armor, her watching the warriors leave, Suki watching her with amusement as she struggles to wave a giant fan, her outside of the hut....but I decided that she had to be in front of the statue. Unfortunately, the idea of her looking stonily up at Kyoshi's face was an idea that would have been impossible; it could work in an animation, but not in a single picture. So I settled on the version you see. I considered having her mimicking Kyoshi's pose, but decided against it; I wanted more emotion in the picture.

Koko used some references, with a Kyoshi pose for reference (with deliberate errors, she's not perfect yet), and Kyoshi's statue was necessarily drawn straight from reference. It's a statue, it can't really change.

I hope the suspense and breath-before-the-jump really comes through in this.

The background made me panic temporarily; I finished digitally relining and coloring Kyoshi and Koko, and then I saw what the background was going to require....I got lazy with it, but it's not a picture of Kyoshi Island, it's Koko. Even if she's a tad skewed....stupid scanner. So forgive the background and just look at Koko. Mainly that bit of swishing hair behind her right ear (HER right, our left). I really like that bit....

Koko and Kyoshi belong to Mike, Bryan, Viacom, and Avatar: The Last Airbender.
